MUSEUM OF FINNISH ARCHITECTURE | FEBRUARY 12 2014 – MARCH 30 2014

The international exhibition of spring 2014 at the Museum of Finnish Architecture, White City – Modernistic Tel Aviv, arranged in cooperation with the Embassy of Israel, dives into the early stages of modernism, introducing one of the most significant entities of Bauhaus architecture. The exhibition that has been displayed around the world introduces Tel Aviv’s White City, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2003. Built in the 1930s – 1950s, the White City consists of over 4,000 buildings and its scale presents a unique example of a uniform Bauhaus area.

The entity designed by several architects is homogeneous in its planning and style. At the same time, it provides a cross-section of the special characteristics of modernistic architecture. Tel Aviv’s White City combines European characteristics of Bauhaus methods with local environmental conditions. The exhibition initiated by the City of Tel Aviv was first seen at the Tel Aviv Art Museum in summer 2004, right after the UNESCO declaration. Its international version has since toured in slightly different variations around the world and been displayed in numerous museums and biennales such as Architekturzentrum in Vienna, Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in Frankfurt and Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. The exhibition arrives in Helsinki from the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

The initiator and curator of the exhibition is Professor Emerita of Architecture Ms. Nitza Szmuk together with architect Tal Eyal. The exhibition design and graphics are by architect Peter Szmuk. The exhibition and accompanying films were produced by Ms. Smadar Timor and Ms. Noa Karavan Cohen. The exhibition travels under the auspices of the City of Tel Aviv and Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
