Degas Complete Sculptures at the Evagoras Lanitis Foundation – Limassol, Cyprus

The exhibition The Complete Sculptures of Edgar Degas, from the collection of the M.T. Abraham Foundation, presents all 74 bronzes by the Impressionist master. During his lifetime, Degas exhibited only one sculpture, The Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen, in 1881. Because of mixed reviews and a hostile public Degas refused to exhibit additional bronzes but continued to create three dimensional works of dancers, horses and bathers in beeswax and plaster. Upon Degas’ death in 1917, 150 sculptures were rescued from his studio of which 73 were in a state that could be transformed into plaster originals. The Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen, undoubtedly Degas’ most important work is included in the M.T. Abraham Foundation’s collection and will be on view with additional pieces depicting ballet dancers, horses and women in their baths. Opens October 10, 2011.
